Korean Catering in Toronto: A Planner's Guide to Office Lunches and Events

Sandwich platters and salad trays are the default for office lunches. They're also the reason nobody gets excited when they hear "lunch is provided." If you're planning a team lunch, corporate catering for a client meeting, or food for an event in Toronto, Korean rice bowls are worth a look.

We're the team at Doraji, a Korean rice bowl spot at The Well in downtown Toronto. Here's what we've learned about Korean catering in Toronto: what works for groups, and what to think about before you order.

Why it works

Why Korean rice bowls work for office lunch catering

Everyone gets a complete meal

A rice bowl has the base, protein and vegetables in one dish, so you're not trying to balance three platters to make sure everyone eats properly.

It's easy to customize

Guests can choose their own protein, base and sauce, all from one caterer.

Dietary needs are easier to cover

Vegetarian, vegan-friendly and gluten-free-friendly options are built into the menu, so one order can work for most of the table.

It's a change of pace

Bibimbap, japchae and dumplings feel like a treat in a way the fifth sandwich lunch of the quarter doesn't.

The bowls

Bibimbap or dupbap?

Our catering is built around two Korean rice bowls. Both come with a choice of base (white rice, purple rice, quinoa, or glass noodles for a small add-on) and sauces like our Doraji Signature, Miso Sesame Mayo and Ssamjang Mayo.

Bibimbap

Mixed rice

Seven seasoned vegetables (bean sprouts, spinach, doraji or bellflower root, shiitake mushrooms, carrots, pickled radish and zucchini), your choice of protein, a fried egg, and our house-made gochujang on the side. You mix it all together. The balanced, veggie-forward choice.

Dupbap

Over rice

Protein over rice with three side dishes: japchae (glass noodles), pan-fried kimchi and shredded cabbage. The heartier, more savoury choice.

Serving style

Individual bowls or family style?

How you serve depends mostly on the size of your group.

Individual bowls are tidy, easy to hand out, and easy to match to the right person. Family style doubles as something to gather around.

Dietary needs

Planning for dietary needs

This is usually the part that stresses planners out the most, so here's what we can tell you up front:

NeedWhat to order
VegetarianVegetarian Bibimbap, Fried Tofu Bibimbap, and Fried Tofu or Japchae Dupbap. All of our sauces are vegetarian. Dupbap bowls come with kimchi made with fish sauce, so ask us to swap it for a vegetable if that matters to your guests.
Vegan-friendlyVegetarian or Fried Tofu Bibimbap without the egg, or Fried Tofu or Japchae Dupbap with the kimchi swapped for a vegetable. For sauces, choose Doraji Soy Sauce, Gochujang or our BBQ sauce.
Gluten-free-friendlyVegetarian Bibimbap and Chicken Bibimbap, and Fried Tofu Bibimbap made gluten-free on request, on rice, quinoa or glass noodles, with Miso Sesame Mayo or Doraji Signature. Our gochujang isn't gluten-free friendly, so ask us to leave it off. Our japchae (the seasoned glass-noodle side) isn't gluten-free, so dupbap bowls and the japchae side aren't suitable.
Nut allergiesNone of our rice bowls contain peanuts or tree nuts. We do use sesame seeds and sesame oil.
Fish sauceOur kimchi (including the pan-fried kimchi in every dupbap bowl) and our dumplings contain fish sauce.

Celiac disease or severe allergies? Mention them in your catering request so we can go over the options with you before you order. Tip: collect dietary needs when you send the invite, not the day before.
